Load-Bearing Wall Removal Services: Licensed Construction Services in California
Ready To Remove That Load-Bearing Wall Safely?
Are you ready to create the open-concept kitchen or great room you’ve always dreamed of? Removing an interior wall can transform your home, but when that wall is load-bearing, the process requires specialized design, precise permitting, and flawless execution.
As a licensed, full-service Design-Build firm in California, Urbatect simplifies this complex structural renovation. We handle the entire project—from the initial analysis and design to the final beam installation and finish work—ensuring your home remains safe, compliant with California seismic codes, and beautifully transformed.
Our Step-by-Step Load-Bearing Wall Removal Process: What to Expect
Step 1
How to Tell if a Wall is Load-Bearing
While you can look for initial clues such as a wall running perpendicular to floor joists or a wall located near the center of the house and continuous to the foundation only a licensed professional can confirm its structural role.
Our first step is an on-site, non-invasive structural assessment. We investigate the load paths from the roof and upper floors down to the foundation to determine the wall’s function and the services required for safe removal.
Step 2
Design and Permitting
Once confirmed, our team completes a site measure and prepares existing-conditions (as-built drawings). A California-licensed civil/structural engineer from our engineering partner network then designs the replacement support system, including beam/support sizing and required calculations, and provides the signed/stamped structural drawings and calculations as required. We coordinate and submit the complete permit package to your local California building department.
Step 3
Safe Removal and Beam Installation
This is the physical transformation. Our team ensures temporary supports are meticulously installed before the wall is safely removed. The new structural beam is then installed, permanently taking over the load transfer. We pride ourselves on prioritizing safety at every moment.
Cost to Remove a Load Bearing Wall in California
The cost to remove a load-bearing wall in California can vary widely, but a transparent cost breakdown is crucial. The total price is influenced by many factors including:
- Wall Length & Location: Longer walls and those in multi-story homes require larger, more complex beams and supports.
- Utilities: Rerouting electrical wiring, plumbing, or HVAC ducts found inside the wall adds significantly to the complexity and cost.
- Beam Material: LVL/glulam vs steel can change both material and installation costs depending on span, headroom, and access.
- Finish Work: The cost of drywall patching, texture matching, and painting to seamlessly blend the new opening is a critical but often overlooked part of the job.

Special mention to John Soliz who gave a detailed explanation of the project timeline and really convinced me Urbatect was the right company for my needs. Also, the design project manager Akanksha has been amazing. Akanksha has been timely in getting different steps of the drawings/plans/permits finished and provided me with regular updates and additional information to keep me informed. I look forward to the construction phase and plan to update my review on that part of the process when it is finished.

3/26/2025I worked with Urbatech to plan the construction of an detached ADU in the backyard of my home. I had contacted several ADU construction companies to discuss the process... read more and cost. I found Urbatech to be the very best. My sales consultant, John Stoliz, was outstanding. He was very knowledgeable, patient, a great listener and was very customer focused. He carefully guided my wife and I through the planning process working closely with his team to develop a plan for construction that met our needs. We asked numerous questions and John always responded and did an outstanding job of informing/coaching us on how best to proceed based on our needs. John was always patient with us. We never felt rushed or under pressure to sign a contract. I enjoyed working with John and his team. Outstanding group. I found their pricing to be very competitive as well. I would highly recommend Urbatech for your ADU needs.

I was in a panic. I have been trying for 5 months to simply put in a window through hcd because I have a manufactured home. Endless delays. After being... read more told I could do a quick sketch and attach it to an email to get my permit, I was told that yet again the inspector wanted something else. An engineering stamp. I've put in Windows before and manufactured homes and never had to do this. Plus it was going to cost me $500. I almost think it is because I'm a retired widow. A person I contracted with said he knew someone and of course I didn't hear a word. So I just went out on my own and found Urbatect.com. I formulated a rather verbose text and thought I would probably not hear back from them. To my shock, I got a return email immediately. Not only that they also immediately provided an engineering stamp. I couldn't believe the fast service. Such a relief and I pray I can put my stupid window in at long last. I just moved to Paso Robles and I've been living with this wall in front of me all this time and the new window leaning on it waiting to go in. It's been driving me crazy! Thank you to this accommodating business that no doubt has many more important things to do than my engineering stamp! THANK YOU AGAIN
A MILLION TIMES OVER.

Although there was some variability in the people I worked with as a client to Urbatect, I'm going to focus my evaluation on the outstanding engineer I worked with, Jay.... read more He was definitely a bright spot in our experience with Urbatect. He was very competent and responsive. My particular build was an unusual build in that it combined mixing an 1800s barn structure with a modern, traditional framing to meet code. Jay did a great job of working with the two types of build. There were a few details that the builder needed that didn't seem to be in the plans but Jay has always been excellent about responding to those issues in a timely way. It was especially impressive because the build has been happening over time (still on-going), but Jay always seems familiar with the details. He definitely reflected a combination of friendliness and expertise. If you become a client of Urbatect, I highly recommend him as your engineer for your structural plans.

Frequently Asked Questions by California Homeowners
1. Do I need a permit to remove a load-bearing wall in California?
A: Yes, you almost always need a permit to remove or alter a load-bearing wall, as it is a structural change that affects your home’s integrity. Permits are legally required to ensure the design meets strict California building and seismic codes. Urbatect includes all necessary permit coordination and submission as part of our integrated design-build service.
2. Will the new opening seamlessly match the rest of my home's interior design?
A: Unlike structural-only contractors, Urbatect ensures the new opening is perfectly integrated. We match existing drywall texture, handle painting, and align baseboards and trim to make the transition look seamless. This is a key benefit of our Design-Build process, which focuses on both structural integrity and flawless finish work.
3. How can you tell if a wall is load bearing without opening the drywall?
A: Homeowners can look for clues: walls running perpendicular to the ceiling joists, walls on the first floor that continue to the foundation below, or walls near the center of the home. However, the only safe way to confirm the status and design the correct replacement (the load-bearing wall beam) is through a licensed professional who analyzes the blueprints and load paths.
4. How long does the entire process of replacing a load-bearing wall take?
A: The total project timeline is typically 8-12 The longest phase is the upfront structural analysis, design, and securing the building permit, which often takes 4 to 6 weeks. The physical construction – safely removing a load bearing wall and installing the new beam – is usually completed by our crew in just a few days.
5. Why is it risky to hire an unlicensed contractor for load-bearing wall removal?
A: Replacing a load-bearing wall incorrectly can lead to severe structural failure, sagging ceilings, costly long-term damage, and voided insurance or future home sales. Only a licensed professional guarantees the work meets current California code, provides proper insurance, and legally obtains the mandatory permits needed for this specialized structural change.
